Opera’s women have never been content to sit quietly and wait for the story to happen to them.
In the premiere performance of Sisters in Arms, dramatic soprano Stephanie DeCiantis, coloratura soprano Nicole Whitney Dubinsky and pianist Suzanne Yeo explore the friendships, rivalries, ambitions and battles of opera’s most unforgettable women.
Moving through six playful chapters, Sisters, Vixens, Lovers, Queens, Witches and Warriors, this cinematic concert blends beloved opera with warm, down-to-earth storytelling in a celebration of women who love, lead, fight and endure.
From Mozart’s scheming sisters and Puccini’s formidable princesses to Verdi’s warriors, Wagner’s would-be queen of the zombie pirates and Bernstein’s exhausted inhabitant of a gilded cage, Sisters in Arms looks beyond the familiar plots to ask what these women want, what they risk and why their stories still feel so startlingly familiar.
Expect powerhouse arias, dazzling coloratura, glorious duets, sharp humour and Opera Sustenida’s signature cinematic videos, featuring music by Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, Bizet, Rossini, Bernstein and more.
Presented by Opéra Queens as the August feature of its historic six-month residency, the first opera residency at TRANZAC.
